Jay Li Wall Art

Jay Li (Born 1962) was born in China in the Guangzhou province. He graduated from the Fine Art Academy of Guangzhou where he studied the techniques of Chinese traditional water painting and went on to become an assistant professor in the Fine Arts Department for 4 years until 1989. He later taught at the Fine Art Teachers College of Canton. Li’s love of color and painterly approach anchors his images – typewriters, fans, and simple objects are loosely rendered. In his paintings, vintage objects are often in the foreground of color field backgrounds. This gives a contemporary edge. From 1989 to 1998, he resided and traveled in Europe and Australia and at the same time worked in Melbourne at Nikos Studios for a year where his interest in oil painting was further developed.

Li has shown in Greece, across Canada, Australia, China and Holland. He started to develop his own innovative style while he was in Greece. This style was inspired by his paintings of contemporary characteristics, Greek churches, enriched by and combined with his own emotional response. Currently, he lives in Ottawa, Canada. His original works can be found in collections in Greece, the United States, France, Switzerland, Holland, Australia, Germany, China and Japan. In the modern multicultural society of Canada, he feels free to pursue his art. Li likes to explore the interplay of form and space on a two dimensional canvas. He also likes to explore geography and he believes form, space and geography should not be clearly identifiable and separate entities.
