Gargoyle Art

Gargoyle art is a byproduct of the modern art movement. Gargoyles themselves were developed partly as a superstition and partly in response to the Gothic era of artwork which depicted church scenes as statues against the walls of cathedrals. The statue prints that make up gargoyle art portray the often grotesque appearance of the statues that were created to ward away evil spirits from cathedrals and other places of holiness.

Gargoyle art are some of the most impressive works of stonework photography available to art audiences today. These works are highly detailed and diverse. The most famous example of gargoyle art is 'Gargouilles in Sepia' by Stephanie Rey-Gorrez, which depicts the legendary stone guardians of the Notre Dame cathedral. However, these fantastic creature photos explore multiple locations and aren't limited to Notre Dame images, though it's the most well-known locale.

Curiously, the idea of gargoyles as protectors of certain domains spans across multiple cultures. Examples of gargoyle art are seen in both Eastern and Western cultures, as well in tribal island cultures where wooden totems are used instead of stone. Cultural images like 'Face in Stone on Buildings Wall' and 'Carving Statue' are examples of non-Western influenced gargoyle art.

Although gargoyle art is grounded in reality, these statue prints are often considered fantastic creature paintings. This additional categorization is largely because of the grotesque, demonic shapes that are commonly used in gargoyle design rather than out of any fantastic properties modernly associated with gargoyles.
